A SIX-GOAL haul from Jarryd Roughead was enough to earn him best on ground honours from the coaches in Sunday’s 62-point win over the Bulldogs.
Roughead received the maximum 10 votes from Hawthorn Coach Alastair Clarkson and Western Bulldogs Coach Brendan McCartney, polling five votes from each in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.
The Hawthorn forward was outstanding in the win, booting three goals in the first and second halves, including two in the first term and two in the last to finish with six for the game.
He also finished with 15 disposals and took a game-high five marks inside forward 50.
Roughead had polled 16 votes for the award in games played in Tasmania this year, receiving votes in three of the four games.
It is the second time he has polled the maximum 10 votes for his performances at Aurora Stadium this year, also receiving best on ground honours for his bag of eight goals against the Eagles in Round 12.
He also polled six votes in the Round 1 win over Brisbane.
Roughead has kicked 21 goals at Aurora Stadium this year – booting five against the Lions in Round 1, eight against West Coast, two against Gold Coast and six on Sunday against the Bulldogs.
The Hawks controlled the midfield battle on Sunday, so it comes as no surprise Liam Shiels (seven votes), Shaun Burgoyne (four) and Jordan Lewis (three) all featured in the votes.
Hawthorn won the clearances 46-36 and contested possessions 161-133, two areas in which Clarkson identified as the Bulldogs’ biggest strengths.
The trio were pivotal in winning that battle to allow the Hawks to run away with a big win.
Shiels had one of his best games for the season and was rated accordingly by the coaches.
In the absence of Sam Mitchell and Isaac Smith, Shiels stepped up and was an attacking weapon with an equal team-high 28 disposals (12 contested).
Shiels was also critical in Hawthorn’s ability to win the clearances (46-36) with seven for the game. He also had two goal assists and laid an equal team-high eight tackles.
Burgoyne was also important at the clearances with five to go along with his 24 disposals (11 contested) and five inside 50s.
Lewis, meanwhile was again Hawthorn’s number one clearance player with a game-high nine and 26 disposals (15 contested).
Defender Grant Birchall continued his run of good form in his home state with three votes thanks to his 27-disposal performance across half-back.
The only Bulldogs to poll were Robert Murphy (two) and Captain Ryan Griffen (one).
