HAWTHORN has named a host of star players for its opening NAB Cup hit out against Gold Coast and Brisbane at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night.

Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli, Jarryd Roughead, Josh Gibson, Matt Suckling, Grant Birchall and Luke Breust are among those who will travel to the sunshine state for the hitout against the two Queensland sides.

Coach Alastair Clarkson and the selection committee have also given youngsters Taylor Duryea, Angus Litherland, Sam Grimley and Luke Lowden the opportunity to stake their claim for senior selection in the season proper, after selecting them in the squad.

Hawks fans will also get their first glimpse of recruits Brian Lake, Joanthan Simpkin, Matt Spangher, Tim O'Brien, Kaiden Brand, Jonathon Ceglar and Jed Anderson in the brown and gold for the first time.

Among the names not included for the NAB Cup opener include Captain Luke Hodge, reigning Peter Crimmins medallist Sam Mitchell, Brad Sewell, Shaun Burgoyne and Jordan Lewis.

Brendan Whitecross and Michael Osborne are still recovering from knee reconstructions and have not been named in the squad.
