This Friday night, Alastair Clarkson will become just the third man to coach Hawthorn in 200 games. The only others to reach the milestone have been John Kennedy Snr. (299 games) and Allan Jeans (221).

Clarkson is actually the first person to coach 200 consecutive Hawthorn games. Jeans coached 174 games in a row from the start of 1981 until the end of 1987, before illness forced him to miss the 1988 season. Kennedy’s longest consecutive sequence was 135 games from the beginning of 1967 until Round 8 1973. He missed Round 9 1973 as he was coaching the Victorian team, with his assistant Roy Simmonds taking charge in his absence.

This week, Hawthorn will be aiming for 11 consecutive wins for the first time since 1975. It also recorded 11 consecutive wins in 1971, while the club record of 12 was achieved in 1961.

It is striking coincidence that the last two occasions when Hawthorn has reached 10 wins in a row has been against Mick Malthouse coached opponents. Before last Friday night win against Carlton, Hawthorn last reached 10 in a row in Round 5 1984 with victory over Footscray at the Western Oval.

Brent Guerra will this week becomes the first individual to play 150 games for Hawthorn after previously playing for two other AFL clubs, in his case Port Adelaide and St Kilda. The previous record for most games by a previous two-clubber was held by Tony Woods, who played 142 games in the brown and gold after previously playing for Fitzroy and Collingwood.

Hawthorn has played 87 matches in Round 13 for 38 wins, 48 defeats and one draw (in 1926). Last season, Hawthorn’s mid-season bye fell in Round 13, but prior to that there had been consecutive wins. In 2010, the Hawks beat Essendon by 16 points at the MCG, in a game that will forever be remembered for Lance Franklin’s two stunning running goals from the boundary line and, in 2011, recorded a 71 point win at Aurora Stadium in the first ever game against Gold Coast.
