DEFENDER Josh Gibson was deemed to be Hawthorn’s best player in Friday night’s win over Carlton by the coaches.
Hawthorn Coach Alastair Clarkson and Carlton Coach Mick Malthouse awarded Gibson eight votes for his defensive job on in-form Carlton forward Jarrad Waite.
The coaches didn’t see a clear standout performer from either side on the night, however, with three players tied on eight votes.
Gibson and Carlton pair Bryce Gibbs and Brock McLean all received a tally of eight votes.
The ever reliable Gibson restricted Waite’s influence on Friday night’s match, with the Blues forward kicking just two goals for the game and 11 disposals.
Waite was in hot form heading into the game, fresh off a seven goal haul against the Bombers the week previous but had little impact on Friday night’s result.
Gibson, meanwhile gathered 18 himself, took four marks and had three rebound 50s to be one of Hawthorn’s best in the win.
Gibbs received eight votes from the coaches for his 28 disposals, five marks, eight tackles, six inside 50s and three rebound 50s.
McLean, the player deemed to be best on ground by Hawthorn Legend and Carlton great David Parkin received the David Parkin Medal for him 34 disposal effort.
Chris Judd received three votes in his 250th match while Brian Lake also received votes for his efforts as a steadfast and impenetrable defence.
Lake took eight marks from opposition kicks to be a brick wall the Blues struggled to bypass all night.
Captain Luke Hodge also received one vote for his role as both a midfielder and defender.
Hodge finished the game with 15 touches, nine of which were contested and four marks.
