HAWTHORN star Jarryd Roughead was voted best on ground by the coaches in Friday night’s win over West Coast at Etihad Stadium.

Roughead booted five goals, gathered 20 disposals and took six marks in a dominant display as a power forward that can play both in the ruck and as a midfielder, such is his versatility.

Three of his five goals came in the opening term, including Hawthorn’s opening two goals of the game.

Roughead received a maximum five votes from both his coach, Alastair Clarkson and opposition coach, West Coast’s John Worsfold in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.

Eagles midfielder Luke Shuey was deemed the second best player on the ground, receiving six votes for his 33 disposal and two goal game.

Hawks defender Brian Lake was voted Hawthorn’s second-best player on the night behind Roughead, for his role as a key defender splitting his time between roles on Josh Kennedy and West Coat’s resting ruckmen Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui.

For the second week running, Lake illustrated why he was targeted by the Hawks during last year’s trade period, because of his ability to read the play, nullify his opponent and use his foot skills to also rebound off half back.

Lake gathered 15 disposals and took eight marks and was rewarded with four votes.

Jack Gunston and Captain Luke Hodge also received votes, polling three each.

Gunston matched Roughead’s five-goal effort with five of his own, three of which were kicked in the first half and two in the final quarter.

He also gathered 17 disposals as too showed his versatility, playing both deep forward and on the wing.

Hodge was Hawthorn’s leading disposal winner with 33.

Luke Breust (three goals) and Lance Franklin (two) also received one vote each for their role in the win.
