MIDFIELDER Sam Mitchell was Hawthorn’s best in the loss to Geelong last Saturday night according to the coaches.

Mitchell was the Hawks’ most consistent performer across the four quarters, with over 20 disposals to half time to be the leading possession winner on the ground.

The midfielder finished the game with 36 disposals, four tackles, four clearances, six inside 50s and four rebound 50s, earning him seven votes from Alastair Clarkson and Chris Scott.

His seven votes placed him as second-best on ground on Saturday night, with Geelong Captain Joel Selwood deemed by both coaches to be best on ground.

Selwood polled a maximum 10 votes in his team’s victory after his 34 possession effort. 19 of his disposals were contested; he also had seven tackles, eight clearances and kicked a goal.

The Geelong captain also polled the maximum 10 votes in the Round 1 game between the two sides.

Midfielder Bradley Hill and defender Brian Lake were the only other two Hawthorn players to poll votes in the loss, each receiving one vote each.

Geelong defender Tom Lonergan polled five votes for his role on Lance Franklin, restricting him to 14 touches and one goal.

Andrew Mackie polled four votes for his 22 disposals and eight marks while midfielder Mitch Duncan polled two votes for the run and carry he provided through the midfield for the Cats.
