THE VOTES for the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award were dominated by Hawks players in the aftermath of Hawthorn’s 58 point win over Brisbane on Sunday.
Six Hawthorn players received votes from the coaches – Hawthorn’s Alastair Clarkson and Brisbane’s Michael Voss, with not one Lion polling a vote from the game.
For the second week running, Jarryd Roughead topped the voting, but the coaches were split in who was best on ground as Roughead received nine votes, one short of the maximum 10.
Roughead is enjoying a rich vein of form that continued at Aurora Stadium on Sunday, with four goals, 18 possessions, eight marks and four tackles.
That effort backs up his five-goal haul against West Coast last week.
The Hawthorn utility is now his team’s leading goal kicker with 40 – three more than Lance Franklin on 37.
Midfielder Shane Savage received six votes in his second game back, after providing great run and proved a dangerous option when playing across half forward.
Savage booted three goals and gathered 21 possessions in the win, with his clean ball handling a feature of his game.
Defender Josh Gibson again received votes, polling five for another courageous display in the backline for the Hawks.
Gibson has been one of Hawthorn’s best performed backmen this season, conceding only a goal a game and consistently thwarting opposition attacks.
He showed great courage on Sunday when he threw his body into oncoming traffic to affect a spoil before landing heavily and his head/neck, luckily escaping serious injury.
Sam Mitchell also received five votes for his role across half back, gathering 26 disposals and Brad Sewell three votes for his 27 touches and seven clearances.
Small forward Luke Breust also polled two votes after playing the majority of the game in the midfield while pushing forward.
He gathered 18 possessions and still managed three goals as well as four score assists.
