Scans today confirmed the opinion of Club medical staff that Hawks midfielder Brendan Whitecross ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during the final quarter of last night’s match.
It is the same knee Whitecross injured in last year’s qualifying final against Collingwood.
Whitecross will undergo a traditional knee reconstruction after consultation with Club doctors and a specialist.
Hawthorn’s Acting General Manager – Football Operations Chris Fagan said the midfielder completed a successful rehabilitation program after rupturing his ACL at the end of 2012, and had not missed a game since his return to the senior side in Round 14.
“Brendan worked extremely hard to gain a regular place in the team in the second half of the season and is understandably disappointed by the disheartening news,” Fagan said.
“As he demonstrated when he injured his knee in last year’s finals series, Brendan’s team-orientated and selfless approach after receiving the diagnosis has been remarkable.
“The timing of the injury is obviously devastating for both Brendan and for our Club, however he has always been considered a young leader within our playing group and he will play an important role in our team over the next week.
“Brendan approached his initial rehabilitation with absolute professionalism, and with the support of the Club we expect he will display the same commitment and dedication again,” he said.
