Hawks trade wrap
WITH the conclusion of the AFL’s trade period on Friday, Hawthorn added two players to its list, as experienced players...
On the opening day of the exchange period, the Hawks swooped on Western Bulldogs key defender, Brian Lake.
The Hawks swapped its first round selection, number 21* for Lake and pick 27* from the Bulldogs.
Lake’s inclusion into the Hawthorn side will strengthen the Club’s defence, already boasting impressive key defender Josh Gibson and Ryan Schoenmakers.
With the inclusion of Lake, defender Thomas Murphy opted to accept a contract from Gold Coast Suns, acknowledging his opportunity to play AFL football in season 2013 could be limited. Murphy was able to join the Suns under the AFL’s new Free Agency rules.
Wingman Clinton Young also opted to leave the Hawks, accepting a contract from Collingwood under the same Free Agency Rules.
Young, an unrestricted free agent joined the Magpies, with the Hawks receiving selection 66 from the AFL as compensation.
On the final day of the trade period, the Hawks opted to on-trade the selection it received for losing Young to secure Sydney utility Matthew Spangher.
The Hawks also received selection 72 from the Swans in the deal struck on Friday.
This trade period also saw 2008 premiership defender Stephen Gilham depart the Club, opting to take up an opportunity to play with the AFL’s newest franchise, Greater Western Sydney.
The Hawks received Northern Territory midfielder, and NT Zone selection Jed Anderson from the Giants.
The deal also involved a swapping of draft choices, with Hawthorn receiving picks 29 and 68 from the Giants in exchange for picks 28 and 65.
At the conclusion of the trade period, it leaves the Hawks with selections 29, 68, 72, 84, 102, 120, 138 in November’s National Draft to be held on the Gold Coast on November 22.
*Draft choices allocated before compensation for the loss of free agents was awarded by the AFL.
