Having lost just three of its previous 24 games in the lead-up to the 2013 Grand Final, Hawthorn had every right to take great confidence into that final Saturday in September.

The Hawks had finally ended the dreaded Kennett Curse the week earlier, overcoming seemingly their greatest demons over the past five years.

But Grand Final week also introduced its own set of haunting memories, with the side having fallen to Sydney on the last day of the season just 12 months earlier. 

A desperate Fremantle side awaited, looking to create its own piece of club history.
