He might have been a late call-up to the senior side in 2020, but the opening three games of Damon Greaves’ AFL career should give the youngster plenty of confidence heading into next year.

Greaves displayed a great level of composure and skill from the get-go after receiving his first senior cap in Round 16 against St Kilda.

A look at the statistics he collated across this three-game span should excite Hawthorn fans as the club looks ahead to 2021.

Who will be deemed Hawthorn's Mr Consistent? 

Greaves was the only player in the competition to operate at at least 90 per cent disposal efficiency whilst also averaging at least 17 possessions.

The young Hawk returned numbers of 17.4 disposals and 90.4 per cent disposal efficiency, with the next closest player league-wide being Eagle Shannon Hurn (15.9 disposals at 87.8 per cent).

Additionally, no player who featured at least three times in this year’s home and away season averaged more rebound 50s than Greaves.

Greaves recorded six, six and eight defensive 50 exits respectively over his three outings between Rounds 16 to 18.

Of the Western Australian’s 35 kicks this season, only two of these were deemed inefficient, causing a 94.3 per cent kicking efficiency.

Once again, no player who recorded more than 20 kicks in 2020 matched that number.

And, before you think ‘these kicks he is taking must just be short chip kicks sideways and backwards’ – check yourself!

The 20-year-old ranked 26^th league-wide for metres gained of those who featured at least three times this season, averaging 354.3 metres gained per game.

As well as being efficient with ball in hand, Greaves also showed little issue in finding the pill.

Of all first-year players, only Gold Coast Sun number one pick Matt Rowell averaged more disposals in 2020. Rowell averaged 17.4 disposals, narrowly eclipsing Greaves’ 17.3 touches per game.

Taken with the 14^th selection in the 2018 rookie draft, Greaves is showing some promising signs of more to come in 2021.
