Hawthorn has taken key forward prospect Jackson Callow with Pick 17 in the mid-season rookie draft.

Callow has been a dominant force playing for Norwood in the SANFL this year, leading the competition for contested marks.

The strong-built player is a familiar face at Waverley Park, having trained with the Hawks over the summer.

The 18-year-old Tasmanian kicked 3.7 from 24 disposals and seven contested marks against an Adelaide's reserves side featuring multiple AFL-listed key backs.

Callow presents as a readymade option at 195cm and 96kg and has remained firmly on the radar of AFL clubs after being overlooked in last year's NAB AFL Draft.

AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan last year likened Callow to Collingwood's Brody Mihocek with his ability to also play down back.

Callow is one of two draftees to join the club via the mid-season draft, after the Hawks swooped on Jai Newcombe with Pick 2.
