Hawthorn will complete a hat-trick of debutants when it unleashes Denver Grainger-Barras onto the AFL stage this weekend.

Jai Newcombe in Round 13, Lachlan Bramble the following week against the Bombers and now Denver, who becomes the eighth Hawks youngster to debut in 2021.

The 19-year-old defender forced the match committee's hand after an eye-catching fortnight of form at reserves level.

Head of Football Rob McCartney said the club had been impressed by Grainger-Barras' professionalism and commitment in the early stages of his footballing career.

"This is a great story of resilience," McCartney said.

"Denver's injury in the early part of the year required him to work hard in the rehab group so that he could make a quick return to play.

"He will be the eighth debutant for our club this season and excitement surrounds the opportunity of seeing another new player take to the field for the brown and gold."

Having been taken with Pick 6 in last year's national draft, Grainger-Barras made a stunning first impression in his maiden pre-season campaign, showing impressive football IQ and an ability to read the flight of the ball.

Although the start to his season was forcibly delayed after the Western Australian injured his knee in a practice match against Richmond in late March.

The ensuing three months on the sidelines allowed the Swan Districts product to gain strength in the gym whilst building his understanding of the Hawthorn game plan.

The vivacious youngster said it was a "surreal" feeling to receive the senior call-up.

"It's been a whirlwind of congratulations and boys coming up to me with advice already - it's an experience I know I'm going to take advantage of," Grainger-Barras said.

"I just spoke to my mum, my dad and my girlfriend and I think they were just as excited as I am, maybe even a little bit more!

"To be honest, I wasn't really expecting this, I knew I'd had a good bout with the VFL on Sunday but I just didn't think it would come this early so I'm really, really lucky!"

The full Hawks squad will be released on Thursday at 6.20pm, before the team of 22 to take on the Giants is announced on Friday at 5pm via hawthornfc.com.au
