Box Hill missed its chance to lock in a place for finals, falling to Werribee by 25 points at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.
The Hawks required 21 points for victory at the final change, and a lifted intensity along with a Jarryd Roughead switch to the forward line, resulted in sharpshooter Jackson Ross snapping his second goal for the day to kickstart the fightback.
But the Hawks ultimately proved no match for the fifth-placed Werribee, with the home side notching two late goals to seal a comfortable victory.
Development Assistant Coach Torin Baker gives us his review of each AFL-listed player.
Marc Pittonet (17 disposals, 7 inside 50s, 63 hitouts)
“Pitto was our best player on the day. He had a number of clearances himself and was dominant in the ruck with over 60 hitouts. He’s continued his really strong form at VFL level.” TB
Harry Morrison (23 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles)
“Harry played a combination of inside midfield and on the wing. Considering his preparation, coming over as the emergency from Canberra that morning, he had a really strong game overall. He was high up in our possessions and one that worked really hard all day.” TB
Teia Miles (19 disposals, 5 marks, 6 inside 50s)
“Milesy played a combination of forward and back. We thought while he was providing pressure down forward and ran some good patterns, he was best served behind the ball. He was able to ignite our ball movement from there and make us a lot more damaging.” TB
Conor Glass (15 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles)
“Conor didn’t have has much damage with ball in hand as previous weeks. Although he was still really strong around the clearances. He’s certainly had a very good year when he’s come back to play at VFL.” TB
Dylan Moore (12 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles)
“Dylan has now played a couple of games back and has been on limited game time. He was great with the ball in hand; he made the most of his chances kicking two goals on the day. He put on some really solid pressure, and he’s made some strong steps after spending a month on the sidelines with injury. We are hoping to get full game time from him this week and going forward.” TB
Jack Scrimshaw (17 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles)
“Scrimma played his second game back from injury and got his hands on the ball a number of times. It is good to see him do that, with his impressive ball use. He made another step forward after his long layoff.” TB
David Mirra (14 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles)
“Dave sets himself super high standards with his form all season. His ball use wasn’t quite at that level, but he was still very strong in his contests on the day.” TB
Mat Walker (8 disposals, 4 tackles, 1 goal)
“Mat had a couple of great highlights in the game – obviously his mark and a great snap goal as well. We are loving seeing him play really confident footy now and his last month has been great to see. Although this game wasn’t at the same level – his form has been really pleasing for everyone involved and himself.” TB
Damon Greaves (12 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles)
“Overall we are really pleased with the output Greavesy has had this year and his commitment to want to improve. Whilst Saturday was not one of his best games he’s played over the last month, we know he’s putting in all the work in to get better and better. In his first year, that’s all we can ask for.” TB
Kaiden Brand (9 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles)
“Brandy went forward for the second week. He’s still learning that role, but we saw some exciting things from him with a couple of strong marks. We will obviously consider what role he will play in the future, but he does show something to give us some confidence in the role he is playing up forward.” TB
Jackson Ross (9 disposals, 2 marks, 2 goals)
“We thought Rossy was diligent in the role we asked him to play. He’s been someone who makes things happen out of half-chances – kicking two sharp goals again on the weekend. We were really pleased with the role he did play on the day.” TB
Jarryd Roughead (10 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles)
“This week is a big week for Roughy, and we might have seen the last of him at VFL level. He’s been fantastic with educating our players and is a joy to have in our group. His contest work was really strong on the day as a defender.” TB
Jacob Koschitzke (10 disposals, 3 marks, 2 rebound 50)
“We’ve seen some really strong improvements from Kozzy. He made some really good decisions in whether to mark or spoil, and his physicality was again a highlight in his game.” TB
