SHAUN Burgoyne has joined fellow indigenous AFL stars in a TV campaign to promote the league’s Indigenous Round.

Hailing from Kokatha in South Australia, Burgoyne stars in the ad that pays tribute to the actions of Saints great, Nicky Winmar.

20 years ago, Winmar raised his St Kilda guernsey proudly at Victoria Park to proudly show his skin colour.

Burgoyne joins North Melbourne’s Lindsay Thomas, Essendon’s Paddy Ryder and Carlton’s Andrew Walker in the ad that will air on Monday to promote Indigenous Round - Round 9 of the AFL.

Each of the players are wearing their 2013 playing guernsey in the commercial, and raise their jumpers in the same way Winmar did 20 years ago.

The Hawks utility says it is a privilege to be part of the ad campaign shot at Victoria Park.

“It is 20 years since the Nick Winmar incident at Victoria Park and I was really happy and privileged to be part of a campaign that takes something pretty ugly and negative at the time which turns it into the positives which we have today," Burgoyne told News Limited.

Burgoyne was only a youngster when Winmar brought the issue of racial vilification to the forefront of the AFL in 1993 and remembers seeing the famous image in the newspaper.

He says as he grew older, he began to further understand the significance of the former Saint’s action and is grateful for the stance taken by those before him.

“I saw the photo when I was younger and probably didn't understand what was going on at the time, but as you go through school and talk to people you understand the significance of the moment and what Nicky and other players in the AFL went through.

"They were doing it to take a stance. It brought in a rule which protects indigenous and multicultural players.

“You have a right to come to work and feel safe and secure."

Hawthorn has seven indigenous players on its list - Burgoyne, Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli, Jed Anderson, Bradley Hill, Derick Wanganeen and Amos Frank.

The Hawks take on Gold Coast at the MCG in Indigenous Round on 26 May.
