Gunston crowned 2020 Peter Crimmins Medallist

With 19 senior games to his name prior to this season, James Cousins was made to earn the 20th match of his career in 2020.

A consistently strong performer at reserves level, Cousins received his AFL call-up ahead of the side’s Round 13 clash against Port Adelaide.

From there, the 22-year-old got his chance and did not let go, playing in every game for the rest of the season.

His 19.5 disposal average on the season was a career-high, with his final three outings especially prominent, averaging 21.7 disposals and five inside 50s.

No Hawk bettered Cousins’ rate of 4.8 inside 50s per game this year, which was an area of improvement for the midfielder this year – his ability to get the ball in dangerous positions.

Playing in a Hawthorn midfield that comprises of Mitchell, O’Meara and Worpel, Cousins’ strength of being able to play forward of the ball and still have an impact was a valuable asset to the side this year.

Cousins will be hoping to continue this momentum into the 2021 season.
