Hawthorn has dropped to its lowest ranking on the age ladder in a decade.

The Hawks 2021 squad is the seventh-oldest league-wide with an average age of 24.6 years.

In each of the previous four seasons, the club has sat within the three oldest lists across the competition and and hasn't been as 'low' as seventh since 2011.

Greaves: I want to be a best 22 lock

The Hawks farewelled five of their oldest six players last year, including Paul Puopolo, Ricky Henderson, James Frawley, Isaac Smith and Ben Stratton.

Of that sextet, only Shaun Burgoyne remains.

There isn't necessarily any correlation between age and success.

The Hawks have sat at the older end of the spectrum for the past four years but managed to play finals in just one of these seasons.

But, in 2015, the Hawks grand final side became the oldest premiership side in history.

There are currently 26 players on the Hawks list aged 25 or under.

While there is five 30-plus-year-olds, including the 38-year-old Burgoyne who is the oldest player in the league.

Excluding the five draftees, there are only four players on the Hawks list who are yet to make their AFL debut.

A positive of this lowering in age means there's a new wave of young Hawks coming in, tasked with driving the standards for the club.

The likes of Will Day, James Worpel, Jack Scrimshaw and draftee Denver Grainger-Barras are just a few of the exciting young names who will feature in this 'changing of the guard' era.
