What to expect
Melbourne will be looking to build on their gradual improvement as they take on the Hawks at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.
Going down by 38 points to Sydney in Round 6, the Demons’ sloppy ball use saw them concede seven goals to one in the first half.
But a positive response from the players after half time was enough for coach Paul Roos to know his side is continuing along the right track.
“I thought their second half tonight showed that we’ve come a fair way as a footy club,” Roos said post-match.
“I mean that was a hundred-point loss at half time, and we played against a team that’s clearly going to be at the pointy end of the season.
“(The players) really fought it out, gave ourselves a chance to score and play the way we want to play.
Roos admitted that the Dees’ level of teamwork and cohesion remains an area letting the side down.
“Probably that’s where we’re just not at that level of Sydney, and their organisation as a group.
“I still think we’ve got a long way to go to play as a team, we’re still trying to fight our own battles out there.”
Melbourne will this week face their third consecutive side from last year’s top-four, with the Hawks also stung by an upset loss to GWS.
However Roos is optimistic about the challenge that awaits his side coming into their clash against the reigning premiers.
“Clearly what we’re trying to do as a footy club is emulate the likes of Freo and Hawthorn and Sydney.
“(It’s) a great opportunity for us to obviously try and compete, but also work out what they do really well.”
Players to watch
Key defender Tom McDonald has emerged as an early contender for this year’s All Australian team, after continuing his good form against the Swans.
McDonald was able to hold Buddy Franklin goalless while gathering 25 disposals and a game-high 10 marks himself.
Captain Nathan Jones has also been a consistent performer this season, leading the side in disposals, while forward pair Jeff Garlett and Jesse Hogan lead Melbourne’s goal kicking.
Potential Changes
Multiple changes to the side are unlikely despite the Demon’s Round 6 loss, with Paul Roos conceding he’ll be cautious not to make too many alterations.
Chris Dawes and Dom Tyson were reportedly hampered by knee issues against Sydney, while Jake Spencer will have to fight to remain his spot, with Mark Jamar a potentially recall to the side to face the Hawks.
Neville Jetta may be a chance to return after concussion had previously kept him out, while Jack Grimes and Viv Michie were among the best for VFL side, Casey.
